Google.org Awards R35 Million to WeThinkCode for AI Skills Training in Africa
WeThinkCode secures R35 Million backing from Google to expand AI training.

South African tech academy WeThinkCode has secured R35.4 million in funding from Google.org to scale its artificial intelligence (AI) training programme across South Africa and Kenya. The non-profit organisation aims to equip 12 000 learners with critical AI skills to thrive in an ever-changing job market.

The grant will enable WeThinkCode to upgrade its learning management system (LMS), allowing for both in-person and online training with support in various local languages. The academy will also deepen collaboration with its network of industry partners to integrate real-world applications of AI into its curriculum.

Founded in 2015, WeThinkCode trains youth from underserved communities in software development and emerging tech skills. Its inaugural cohort launched in 2016 in Johannesburg. The academy has since expanded to Cape Town and Durban, and now delivers its curriculum at public Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges across South Africa.

All training is offered free of charge. The tuition-free programme includes technical mentorship and a needs-based stipend, funded by more than 65 corporate sponsors.

The investment comes at a critical time. According to SAP’s AI Skills Development in Africa report, demand for AI skills is expected to grow significantly in 2025. 85% of surveyed organisations cited AI development skills as a priority, while 83% identified generative AI skills as a key focus area.
