Meta Llama Impact Accelerator now open to African startups.

African startups can now apply for the Meta Llama Impact Accelerator, a programme designed to support innovative startups using Llama, Meta’s open-source large language model (LLM), to develop impactful solutions. The initiative is open to startups in Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and Senegal.

Successful applicants stand a chance to receive equity-free funding of up to $25,000 with cash prizes awarded as follows:

  •  First prize: $25,000
  •  Second prize: $15,000
  •  Third prize: $10,000

The accelerator targets pressing challenges across various sectors, including healthcare, agriculture, education, public safety, and more. The specific focus areas vary by country, and applicants must reside in the country for which they apply.

What is Meta Llama?

Llama is Meta’s suite of LLMs, designed to generate and understand human-like text. Open-sourced and resource-optimised, Llama enables startups to build scalable solutions without the need for significant computational power.

Who Should Apply?

South African startups interested in the programme must meet the following criteria:

  • Have a working prototype or minimum viable product (MVP)
  • Be available to participate in the six-week accelerator programme
  • Offer a solution aligned with the country’s focus area:

South Africa’s key focus areas include:

  •  Healthcare
  •  Agriculture
  •  Education
  •  Public safety
  • Public service
  • Wild card: An open category for standout solutions beyond the listed sectors

The programme includes hands-on training, technical mentorship, and development support by local and international experts. It culminates in a Demo Day, where selected startups will pitch for prize funding.

Following demo day, participating ventures will receive six months of tailored support, including guidance on scaling their solutions and accessing further funding opportunities.

Applications close on 27 June 2025. The programme begins in August, with demo days scheduled between September and October 2025.
